Pinhole Surgical Technique

Pinhole periodontal disease surgery offers a revolutionary way to treat gum recession without the pain of traditional methods requiring grafting, sutures, or incisions. Traditional methods require donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to rebuild the gum line, but pinhole periodontal disease surgery eliminates this need by using a small needle to carefully loosen your healthy gum tissue and place it over the exposed tooth roots. The special dental instruments used as part of this breakthrough technique remove the need for large incisions into the gum. Instead, a small hole the size of a needle is used to make slight adjustments to the gum tissue.

My wife and I had been going to a general dentist for many years. After having repeated problems with sensitive teeth we were referred to Dr. Akef, who diagnosed extensive bone loss around one of my teeth, something that should have been done earlier before it became so extensive. To remedy my bone loss Dr. Akef did bone graft, which make it possible to do dental implant. We are totally satisfied with all procedures performed. Thank you Dr. Akef.

I am a retired medical doctor and have been a patient of doctor Akef for over 15 years. he has done a total of 6 implants for me on 3 different times over the years. Although I have been living in Los Angeles area for the past 9 years, I will drive to San Diego to see him for all of my dental problems and implant follow ups. I do the 5-6 hours round trip drives because I have a firm belief in his knowledge, expertise, and care. His office staff are wonderful. - Michael Fassihi, M.D.

Dr. Akef promises and delivers. I had a missing back tooth for many years and did not even bother to try getting dental implants because I was told that there was not enough bone and that bone grafting was not an option for me. However, after receiving a Sinus Lift Surgery 6 months later an implant was placed successfully.

Could not be happier. I am a whimp and cannot stand pain. Dr. Akef reassured me that the dental implant process would be not be very painful. Since I did not need any bone the process was completed in one day. I am very pleased and have recommended Dr. Akef to family members

Other advantages of this treatment over traditional methods include:

Faster recovery time: With traditional grafting, connective tissues from a tissue bank or other source are patched together over the exposed tooth root. The gum tissue is then left to heal in a process that may take one to two weeks due to the fragility of the new tissue. During recovery, patients are limited to soft, cool foods and must take extreme care when brushing or flossing so as not to destroy the sensitive graft. The pinhole technique requires less recovery time and fewer restrictions.

Better comfort: Because the pinhole technique is minimally invasive, the treatment offers greater comfort than traditional grafting. Recovery time is also shorter in a majority of cases.

Better aesthetics: While grafting offers a traditionally successful treatment, the results are not always as natural-looking as patients would prefer. The donated tissue does not always match your natural tissue, which can cause a noticeable distinction. Pinhole periodontal disease surgery uses your own healthy tissue so that your results are natural and your own.
